Velas is a village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis. He was sachiva- a secretary in Peshawai in Pune. It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people of Velas and Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, Chiploon.
At Velas, turtle conservation movement is undertaken by the villagers. An NGO named Sahyadri Nisargmitra and the villagers committee has taken the initiative to conserve olive ridley turtles by providing protection to their eggs. Turtle lay down eggs in the month of November-December and little soul comes out in the month of feb-march each year.

Velas is between March to April which is when Velas Turtle festive is in Progress. During this time the Turtle Hatchlings come out and approach the sea. This site cannot be described in worlds and one should actually go and imbibe this experience which will surely itched in ones mind for ever.
