History: -

Lodged in a rock cave in the Sahyadri hills, the Shiv temple of Marleshwar is a place of great beauty and sanctity. It is named after the village Maral outside which the diety is sayed to have taken up residencet, after having stopped to ask for directions from some villagers .One can reach Marleshwar either from Ratnagiri or Sangameshwar towns, there are regular buses from both.

Marleshwar is a place in Sangameshwar subdivision of Ratnagiri Districtin the Indian state of Maharashtra. Marleshwar is very much popular for the Cave Shiva Temple where one can see venomous snakes who do not bite the devotees. This has resulted in increasing faith in the place and every year thousands of devotees visit the place and perform ablutions in the nearby Bav river. Dhareshwar is a waterfall on the Bav river which is another tourist attraction of Marleshwar.There are many stories about Marleshwar. On the day of 'Makarsankranti' marriage of Marleshwar and Girijadevi takes place. Local villagers celebrate the marriage ceremony with great enthusiasm. Besides on 'Mahashivratri' and 'Tripuri Poornima' there is fair. At the beginning of 18th century, this 'Shivling' was in Muradpur, which was brought here in the cave after tyrant Muradkhan started vexing people of Muradpur. This temple is known as 'Trambakeshwar' of Konkan. Marleshwar name may have come from Maral village..

 

Description: -

Marleshwar is a place in Sangameshwar subdivision of Ratnagiri district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This is a small Shiva Temple which takes about one and a half hours to reach by road. The Temple can be reached by climbing approximately 300-400 steps which are lined with refreshment stalls to keep the climbing pilgrims refreshed. The Shiva Temple is situated inside a cave and has a small viewing platform in its premises from which the magnificent Dhareshwar Waterfalls can be admired. Every year thousands of devotees visit the temple and perform ablutions in the nearby Bav river

 

Best Time to visit:-

Monsoon or just after monsoon is the best time to visit Marleshwar because of all the greenery & cool climate all around. Beware of the numerous monkeys around as they can be quite aggressive and snatch almost everything from your hands.
